Trolling Tips for Spanish or King Mackerel!!

http://www.reefari.com Heres some great fishing and trolling tips video for Spanish or King Mackerel. Always troll the deepwater points and reef ledges, as this is where mackerel will hold feeding for baitfish. No point trolling a desert, so work good deep ledges, points, and rocks which hold fish. This was an area I rarely fish or troll, but sticking to the above rule, we managed to find three nice Spanish Mackerel within an hour and topped the esky off nicely after catching a good feed of reef fish. Made for another top day out fishing. It pays to vary things up and adds another dimension to a great day out on the water. I’ll normally work an area for half an hour and if no luck move on. Keep an eye on the tides as certain areas will fish better on a certain tide. Just because no strikes, doesn’t mean there are no fish there. I’ll troll the same area again, but on the way back to port, maybe 6 hours later and a tide change can make all the difference.
Keep trying and trolling different rigs, I like to troll a mix of lures and baits, with wogs working really well around the islands. These are a great swimming rig with gar(ballyhoo), and very quick and easy to rig. Often if the mackerel are fussy and won’t hit lures, they’ll rig a swimming gar or wolf herring. You gotta love wogs and well worth giving a troll. Check out our other trolling videos and how to’s, but you should be able to troll 4 lures/baits out of most boats, Just stagger your lures and depths correctly. Run the lures in close and deep and the shallower rigged baits further back.

Lure challenge Xrap Magnum 20 V Rapala CD18 V JP Mungo Firestick

http://www.reefari.com This Lure Challenge puts three favourite lures up against each other to see what the best lure is. An interesting lure test with the Xrap Magnum 20 winning on the day, and also lost in battle in the end. These lures have been a great performer and also the Magnum Xrap 30 is a definate must have in your tackle box, and that good I would always have one in your lure spread. The amount of trips I’ve been on, and they been the gun lure, catching about twice the fish, per lure when compared to other lures. Other awesome lures are the Halco lazer pro, and RMG Scorpions.
They have great appeal and will catch fish of all species, from Mackerel to Coral trout and everything found amongst the Great barrier reef and edges. We also ran a Rapala CD18, one of the original famous Mackerel lures, and JP Mungo firestick deep divers, another awesome lure. Bit early in the mackerel season but knowing a few had been caught we thought we go for a quick troll around the nearby Keswick and St Bee Islands. First up a 17 Kg Spanish Mackerel fell to the Xrap Magnum 20 lure and we were pretty impressed. Bit more trolling and trying the local hot spots, ended up back at Singapore rock at the end of the day. Check the video out, but must have had a small mackerel on, which in turn got belted by a shark, ending up in alot of grief and hurt for me. I did the sensible thing and handed the rod over to Jason, as I am still recovering from a Spinal fusion operation. Long story short, the Shark won it’s freedom after a tense tug of war with Jason, And of course one less Magnum Xrap lure, and all on it’s first swim. Please keep an eye out for whaler shark around Singapore Rock!!

Trolling Halco Laser Pros 190 on the Great Barrier reef

http://www.reefari.com You gotta love Halco Laser Pro’s 190 lures, one of my favourites and a must have in your tackle box. In this fishing video we’re out trolling the reef edge and points. We scored a couple of nice fish, one Spanish Mackerel and one Shark mackerel in a matter of mnutes. So they do work and a great fish catcher. Great lure and more info below,
They’re a great lure incorporating strength, durability and one of the best fish catching ability. The outer body has extra secure hook anchoring and towing points that are built in as an integral part of the lure body. Halco’s Bullet proof bib securing system provides added strength and ensures faultless swiming performance trolling at high and low speeds between two and eight knots.

The halco lures are are now widely recognised as one of the world’s best bluewater trolling lures, this 47 gram lure can be trolled over a wide speed band, however its optimum speed for trolling for pelagics I like to tow is around 4 to 6 knots. Troll lures at a distances ranging from 10 to 50 metres from the boat. I like to run the crazy deep in close under the propwash, back about 30 feet. This also enables you to Troll more than one lure preferably three or four imitating a school of bait fish. Check out our other trolling videos with more info on this to maximise your success. More lures, more chances.

Remember, always troll your lures at different distances and angles from the boat. Not only does this cover more area, with the crazy deep lure in close it helps avoids tangles when turning the boat.
