Snapper Tagging and the Storm
On Monday, Feb. 7, three scientists from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute went offshore out of Ponce Inlet aboard the Finest Kind II, the commercial fishing vessel of Capt. Paul Nelson of Port Orange. The trip marked the first outing to tag red snapper in modern fisheries management on Florida’s Atlantic coast. In all, 67 red snapper were tagged. Then a storm generating tornado warnings blew in from the west and the crew had to push through 50 mph winds and 8-foot seas to return home.
